Detroit

"I love this city.  I love its people,...I want to be part of the renaissance of this city." Mayor Dave Bing in a speech to the Economic club as reported in the Free Press.  This make me sick.  The city of Detroit sucks.  Stop pretending that Detroit can be major city of business or pleasure, contributing economically to the state of Michigan until we admit that it is a poor city filled with uneducated, drug dependent, unsupervised adolescents, criminal elements and welfare recipients who have no intention of changing.  Because until those in power admit it, it won't change!  People in Detroit kill each other daily.  The school system is so bad the entire state of Michigan is suffering for it.  There is no business section, no industry, no retail or manufacturing because no one wants to actually go to work because they can get their booze and dope without a paycheck.  Detroit is dominated by a culture that needs to change form within.  Bill Cosby has said it, but the leaders of Detroit still insist that if they were given more they could do more.  STOP IT!  And stop allowing the very people who should be caring about the welfare of this city to drag into the depths of Hell.  Admit that there is so much to be done, so much that needs to change, that no one man or woman can do it.  It will take a village so you better start rounding up neighborhood leaders and empowering them.  Anyone in Detroit who is ready to blame anyone but themselves, get rid of them, because you know what?  They don't care about Detroit, they care only about themselves and they are killing this city.

  1. But . . . But . . . Bing isn't even collecting a salary -- right? So . . . Certainly, that has to be a step in the right direction, in terms of leadership? Or am I missing something?

  2. I know, this was quite a rant, but whether Bing is collecting a salary or not, doesn't matter. What matters is he is talking about some great changes that are going to happen to make Detroit great, but it isn't happening! Everyone talks about what a great city Detroit can be but then nothing is done to help the people who actually live there. It just makes me sick.

  4. Rose I have to disagree with your latest blog. I know you're not but it sounds a bit racist. The only time African Americans have had full employment was during the time of slavery. And they weren't even paid. Talk about the two tier wage system. Anyway, they haven't had access to good health care or a good education system ever. And if you're not healthy you can't learn and if you are unable to learn, well we have seen the results of these facts. Who's to blame? We all are. White flight didn't help. We treated the African Americans as second class citizens. And when they moved into 'our' neighborhoods we split because we could. Hell our shadows still haven't caught up to us we ran so fast 'through the brambles and the bushes where a rabbit wouldn't go'.

As far as manufacturing of durable goods in Detroit and elsewhere, well it doesn't exist anymore. Why because there is no demand for them. Do you have any trouble finding a car, tv, appliances, furniture etc. No they are in ample supply. Unfortunately for the working middle class those goods are made cheaply and inexpensively elsewhere. And are sold back to us at inflated prices compared to what it cost to manufacture. Allowing corporations to reap enormous ill gotten profits for their ceo's stockholders and greedy politicians. And for this you can thank Ronald Reagan and all the Bush's for their supply side theory of economics and their trickle down theory. It worked if you like getting pissed on. And if the neo-cons get control of the House and or Senate, whatever gains have been made in the last two years will vanish maybe forever. So whatever problems the city of Detroit has now it will be ten times worse for them and what is left of the middle class, which is us. Well that is my rant back at ya little sister.

  5. While I agree with your history lesson, I do not think the past can be used as an excuse, and for too many it is. There are too many corrupt leaders not caring about the very people they represent. There are too many people who see the improvements for the city as a way to profit, not as a way to improve the livelihood of the citizens of Detroit. And there are too many people like Pastor Charles Williams II of King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit, who says, "Don't look at the fact that the brother was wearing a turban" in his defense of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah. He is not helping his own people with this attitude of, if you're black you can do no wrong. Let's stop hiding our heads in the sand, black people need to help black people. Oh and while I am on the subject, The Jalen Rose Academy?" Come on, what is that saying to little black kids?

  6. And yes Melanie it was. I am a little disappointed in President Obama for not speaking out more loudly against the Republican morons he has to put up with, who fight him every step of the way simply because they do not want a Democrat to be successful, even if the plan is good for the country.

  7. You know Rose, if we don't learn from the past we are bound to repeat it. I know you don't agree with Melanie's comment but people should help people. We are one human race living on a small planet. Don't get me wrong I don't mean we (America) should go around the world telling people and countries they should be like us (heaven help them). That is putting the cart before the horse. We need to take a deep breath and exhale before we judge.

  8. I couldn't agree more. I also agree with the adage, "God helps those who help themselves." This blog was not about not helping those in need. It was about leaders in Detroit continually stating that things are changing, or will change and what a great city it is or will be, and nothing is being done to make the city more livable for those who have to live there. I guess my writing skills have failed me, because I wasn't clear and you didn't get it. And I don't agree with Eric's comment because I haven't the slightest idea what he is talking about! If all of what he wrote is in response to my blog, I too have missed something! So I'll say it, I just don't get it!

  9. Oh, I got what you meant. I was just trying to explain the reasons why the leaders of Detroit might feel that way. Anyway Optimism even in the face of hopelessness is better than being negative.

  10. Right, but it is time to talk about the elephant in the room, because it has been there a long time and it is tired of being ignored! I am writing a new blog to revisit this one.
